International Bat Night celebrated at Cristo Rei

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) will mark International Bat Night with a public initiative at the Cristo Rei Viewpoint in Garajau on Saturday, August 29. The event, starting at 9:00 PM, aims to bring the public closer to Madeira's biodiversity.

Participants will have the opportunity to detect and listen to the ultrasonic calls of bats, which are crucial for their navigation and hunting. Specialized equipment will be used to convert these sounds, inaudible to the human ear, into audible signals, allowing for the tracking of these animals' nocturnal activity.

The initiative, organized in partnership with Madeira Fauna & Flora, is part of an annual European event and seeks to educate about the biology, habitats, and ecological importance of bats, including their role in insect control. The goal is to demystify these flying mammals and promote their conservation.
