Island Student Program Reopens with Guaranteed Treasury Mechanism

The Island Student Program has officially reopened, with the Regional Government of Madeira fulfilling its commitment to reactivate the treasury mechanism.

This measure ensures that students from Madeira and Porto Santo pay only 59 euros per trip to the mainland and Azores, without needing to pay the full ticket cost upfront. The operationalization is the result of a joint effort between the Regional Secretariats for Finance and Tourism.

Regional Secretary for Finance, Duarte Freitas, expressed satisfaction in announcing the reopening, highlighting the coordinated work to reactivate this crucial mechanism and keep promises made to families.

The program, representing an investment of over 37 million euros since its 2018 launch and benefiting more than 11,200 students, aims to remove economic barriers to pursuing higher education.
