Sustainability is no longer an abstract concept but a matter of management for Madeiran companies, stated Regional Secretary for Economy José Manuel Rodrigues. In an economy where tourism is crucial, Madeira must compete on quality and authenticity without compromising its resources.
Rodrigues emphasized that sustainability should be an integral part of business strategy, becoming an internal competence rather than an external obligation. The ISO 21401 standard, which sets requirements for sustainability management systems in tourist accommodations, was highlighted as an incentive for organizations to self-assess with greater rigor.
The official stressed that the State's role is to create conditions for companies to make better decisions and raise competitiveness standards, rather than dictating management. Sustainability, while requiring investment, presents an economic opportunity, as its absence incurs increasing costs in a resource-dependent economy facing climate and regulatory pressures.
