Councilors from Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) in the Funchal Municipal Chamber (CMF) have declared that recent sewage discharges at Gorgulho-Gavinas Beach are the municipality's "total responsibility." The party lamented the "irresponsible stance" of the mayor, Jorge Carvalho, who, according to councilor António Trindade, contradicted himself when addressing the issue.
Following reports from bathers and media coverage of two discharges this summer, JPP questioned the PSD/CDS majority. Initially, the CMF Environment councilor acknowledged occasional discharges linked to gardens and pools, but Mayor Jorge Carvalho later denied this, attributing the source to residences.
Official documentation requested by JPP indicates that while no formal complaints were recorded, the municipality learned of the incidents via social media. A subsequent inspection found a damaged sewage collector, which the mayor admitted could be the origin of the reported discharges.
