The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has demanded explanations from the Regional Secretary for Economy concerning the alleged "discount" of 10 cents per liter on gasoline and diesel prices in Madeira, compared to the mainland.
According to JPP's analysis of prices effective since Monday, diesel in Madeira is only 2 cents cheaper than on the mainland, and 95 octane gasoline is 6 cents cheaper. The party also notes that the difference compared to the Azores is 25 cents less for diesel and 5 cents less for gasoline.
JPP deputy Luís Martins recalled the promise made by the Secretary for Economy that fuel in Madeira would be at least 10 cents cheaper, referencing the Strait of Hormuz crisis. Martins criticized what he sees as an "exploitation" of Madeiran pockets, especially during the holiday season, and warned of the impact on inflation and the cost of living in the region.
