Madeira experienced a 20.3% decrease in new company formations in the first seven months of 2026, mirroring a national negative trend.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a 20.3% decrease in the creation of new companies between January and July 2026, with 804 formations compared to 1,009 in the same period of 2025.

This decline follows a national trend, where company creation fell by 4.2%. In contrast, business closures in Madeira increased by 16.6% to 218 companies, while nationally they decreased by 16.3%. Funchal saw its net company balance drop by approximately 29%.

Insolvency proceedings in Madeira more than doubled, with a 120% increase to 33 new cases, against a national increase of 5.2%. The transport sector was identified as the main contributor to the reduction in business activity in the region.
