The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has questioned the construction methods used in improvement works on the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, in particular the replacement of a wooden bridge with a concrete structure.
Rafael Nunes, who chairs the Madeira Legislative Assembly's Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Climate and Natural Resources, visited the site and called for clarification, noting that the work is taking place in an environmentally protected area within the Natura 2000 network.
JPP says it does not dispute the need to restore walking trails, improve safety or build durable infrastructure, but argues these goals must be balanced with environmental protection. Nunes wants to know which alternatives were assessed and whether an environmental assessment was carried out. JPP will request clarification from the Regional Government and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation.
