The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has released the economic-financial study on the regular maritime link between Madeira and the mainland, promised by the Republic's Government. The JPP considers the study of high public interest, highlighting that none of the analyzed scenarios achieve financial balance solely through operating revenues.
The party argues that the link should not be evaluated solely on its commercial profitability but as a public policy for mobility, territorial cohesion, and equality. The study acknowledges the ferry as a tool for cohesion, reducing asymmetries, and diversifying transport modes, in addition to being an alternative to air travel.
The JPP regrets the Regional Government's distancing from a commitment made since 2015 and points out that the fact that the only shipowner interviewed was Grupo Sousa warrants consideration. The party advocates for the State to assume its responsibilities and guarantee a public service model with stable funding, given the strategic importance of the link and the excessive dependence on air transport.
