The Left Bloc (Bloco de Esquerda) held a public outreach initiative in downtown Funchal over the weekend. The focus was the steady rise in the cost of living and the housing crisis, which have sparked protests across Portugal.
Dina Letra, coordinator of the party's Madeira branch, criticised cross-party agreements on the right that she said had opened the door to Golden Visa and digital nomad schemes and to tax breaks for non-habitual residents, and that she said backed a housing eviction law.
The party proposes caps on rents, measures to ease mortgage payments, a larger public housing stock and the use of vacant public buildings. It has called on residents to join a demonstration on 14 November.
