Security researchers, in partnership with Gamers Nexus and Level1Techs, have identified significant vulnerabilities in several LG Smart TV models. The discovered flaws could allow attackers to eavesdrop via the TV's microphone, even when it appears to be off, and access local network information.
The analyses revealed that the tested LG TVs could identify devices on the local network, such as phones and computers, and collect nearby Wi-Fi network names and signal data. Researchers also demonstrated that a compromised TV could capture and store audio when disconnected from the internet, retrieving it later. Remote code execution vulnerabilities were also reported to LG.
Experts warn that Smart TVs, being internet-connected computers, require the same security and privacy considerations as other connected devices. Immediate installation of firmware updates and measures to limit data collection and the TV's access to sensitive information are recommended.
