The Public Prosecutor's Office has filed charges seeking a security measure for a dangerous offender deemed not criminally responsible against the 32-year-old man suspected of killing his mother in March this year. The alleged incident occurred at the home they shared in Água de Pena, Machico.
According to a statement, the charges were filed on July 4th. The investigation alleges the defendant killed his mother by repeatedly striking her on the head and face with a 12-kilogram iron dumbbell, causing fatal injuries. The Public Prosecutor's Office states the defendant suffers from a serious mental disorder, aggravated by psychoactive substance use, which impaired his cognitive abilities and judgment at the time of the offense.
The suspect reportedly threw himself from a height of over six metres when police attempted to detain him, sustaining injuries that delayed his initial judicial hearing. He remains in pre-trial detention in a psychiatric prison unit.
