PSD councillors in Machico have argued that the municipality should return the full 5% of its variable share of IRS revenue to families in 2027. This proposal was presented at the last council meeting but was rejected by the socialist majority.
The social democrats stated that the socialist executive's proposal involves returning only 1%, which they deem "manifestly insufficient" given current economic difficulties. The PSD questions the council's priorities, pointing to investments in "plaques, curbs, and subsidies" instead of fiscal relief for families.
The party recalled their initial proposal of 2.5% IRS return, which was increased to 5% due to the economic situation. The PSD believes this measure would have a "direct effect on the disposable income of Machico families," unlike expenses on works or events with indirect benefits. The PSD councillors approved other fiscal measures, disagreeing only on the variable IRS share, asserting that "the people of Machico come first."
