The centuries-old Fachos tradition once again lit up the Machico valley slopes, drawing locals and visitors alike. The event, which began at 9:30 PM, featured ten flaming cane structures creating figures in the darkness.
An incident occurred when one of the torches spread to the surrounding vegetation. However, the situation was quickly managed with the assistance of the Machico Fire Department.
This tradition, dating back to the 16th century as a warning against pirate attacks, was incorporated into the Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento in the early 20th century, gaining its current devotional and community character.
