The centuries-old tradition of the Torches in Machico once again lit up the slopes of the valley, drawing locals and visitors. The celebration, dating back to the 16th century as a warning against pirate attacks and integrated into the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in the early 20th century, filled the night with color and fire.
This year, the ceremony was marked by an incident when one of the ten torches, prepared by over a hundred people for a month, caused a small fire in the nearby vegetation. The situation was quickly brought under control and the event remained under the watch of the Machico Fire Department.
