Madeira Cable Car Ticket Sales Drop 34.2% in First Half

Cable car ticket sales in Madeira fell by 34.2% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, leading to a 31.5% decrease in revenue.

Cable car ticket sales in the Autonomous Region of Madeira saw a significant drop of 34.2% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. A total of 487,800 tickets were sold, resulting in a 31.5% decrease in total revenue, amounting to approximately 6.9 million euros.

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) reported that the majority of tickets (94.3%) were purchased by adults, with smaller percentages for children (3.8%) and other users (1.8%). However, DREM noted that most cable cars were closed for maintenance, which impacted the overall results.

In contrast, other transport methods saw increases: bus passenger numbers rose by 7.1%, airport traffic increased by 3.1%, and the Funchal-Porto Santo maritime connection experienced a 4.8% rise.
