The monumental Casino da Madeira, with its distinctive reinforced concrete curves from 1976, designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, stands out on Funchal's skyline. The modernist structure, conceived to harmonize with the island's volcanic terrain, broke from traditional architectural lines, introducing curved roofs and large concrete spans, making it a landmark of architecture in Portugal.
The sinuous forms of the reinforced concrete, mimicking sea waves, contrast with the conventional rectangular architecture of commercial buildings of the era. Beyond its gaming areas, the complex houses a significant entertainment and conference center, as well as gourmet restaurants, solidifying the island as a hub for leisure tourism and culture.
