Madeira failed to add a new monument to the list of 7 New Wonders of Portugal. The Monte Palace Garden, which was one of three finalists in the Tourism category, was not selected at the event held in Sintra.
The popular vote ultimately favored the Episcopal Palace Garden in Castelo Branco, which surpassed the Madeiran candidate. The winners were announced during a television program broadcast by TVI.
The Monte Palace Garden, with a history dating back to the 18th century and restored from 1987, is an internationally projected cultural destination and a key attraction for thousands of tourists and locals annually.
