The Autonomous Region of Madeira achieved a historic peak in registered doctors in 2025, with a total of 1,473 clinicians. This figure marks a 3.7% increase compared to 2024, with 53 new professionals declaring residency on the island.
According to data from the Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM), 60.1% of registered doctors are women, totaling 886 professionals. The majority of clinicians, 69.3%, reside in Funchal, followed by Santa Cruz and Câmara de Lobos.
In 2025, Madeira had an average of 5.5 doctors per thousand inhabitants, slightly below the national average but the smallest difference since 1979. Calheta recorded the lowest municipal ratio, with 1.4 doctors per thousand inhabitants.
