The Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) released data on the causes of death in the region in 2024, completing the update of the Regional Health Panel.
In 2024, there were 2,574 deaths in Madeira, a decrease of 7.8% compared to 2023. Malignant tumors were the primary cause of death, accounting for 26.3% of the total.
Geographically, Funchal accounted for the majority of deaths (45.4%), followed by Santa Cruz and Câmara de Lobos. Santana, Machico, and Funchal showed higher mortality rates from malignant tumors. Municipalities with the fewest deaths included Porto Moniz, Porto Santo, São Vicente, Santana, and Ponta do Sol.
