Mosquito bites: what to do and when to seek medical help

Mosquito bites are a common summer nuisance, causing itching, redness, and swelling. The body's reaction is due to proteins in the insect's saliva and usually resolves within a week without treatment.

For immediate relief, wash the affected area with soap and water and apply a cold compress or ice. Avoiding scratching is crucial to prevent infections and speed healing. For intense inflammation or itching, a 1% hydrocortisone cream can be used by adults for up to seven days, but not on infected skin or open wounds.

DECO Proteste advises against topical antihistamines, as their effectiveness is not scientifically proven. For persistent itching, oral antihistamines may be helpful under medical advice. Natural products and home remedies may offer temporary relief but lack robust scientific evidence.
