Approximately one in five children in Madeira, aged between 5 and 14 years, were obese in 2025. The data, released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), comes from the child module of the National Health Survey.
The study revealed that 40.3% of children in this age group in the region were overweight or obese. Specifically, 20.8% were overweight and 19.5% were obese. Nationally, the percentage of children with excess weight or obesity was 35.5%.
The survey also gathered information on children's general health status and eating habits. In 2025, 87.4% of children residing in Madeira received a health assessment classified as "Very good" or "Good," a figure lower than the national average of 92.3%.
