Madeira's RG3 Prepares New Military Capabilities for Future Threats

The Commander of the Army's Land Forces, Lieutenant General Luís Monsanto, highlighted the modernization of operational capabilities at Regiment of Garrison No. 3 (RG3) in Madeira during the unit's 33rd-anniversary ceremony. Technological evolution, drones, and hybrid threats require the Armed Forces to adapt their means and procedures, with experimentation in unmanned systems and the development of communications and engineering being crucial for RG3.

The regiment has also prepared 124 soldiers in Madeira to join a European Union rapid response force for the 2026-2027 readiness cycle, culminating in operational capability certification. This participation underscores involvement in international commitments and the importance of interoperability with allied forces.

Support for regional authorities, including rural fire surveillance and prevention in coordination with Civil Protection, remains a priority. The ability to mobilize personnel and resources for public support missions complements the regiment's strictly military role.
