Madeira's SESARAM Orthopedic Robot Not Yet Operational; Azores Already Performed Surgery

The Regional Health Service of Madeira (SESARAM) has awarded the acquisition of a robotic platform for orthopedic surgery at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, with an investment of 1.299 million euros plus VAT. The equipment, including the Mako robotic arm, is intended for precise knee and hip prosthesis placement.

However, delivery, installation, and team training have not yet taken place, and the process is awaiting approval from the Court of Auditors. Therefore, at the time of verification, the robot was not installed, nor had any surgery using this technology been performed in Madeira.

In contrast, the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada (Azores) performed its first robot-assisted orthopedic surgery on July 7, 2026. This procedure marked the beginning of robotic clinical activity at that hospital, with a regional investment in orthopedic robotics exceeding two million euros, including equipment on Terceira Island.
