The unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 3.5% in the second quarter of 2026, a new historic low that keeps the region with the lowest rate in the country. Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) indicate a decrease of 1.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
The active population reached a historic high of 142,800 people, an increase of 4.8% compared to the previous year. Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Work and Youth, Paula Margarido, highlighted that these indicators confirm the strength of the regional labor market and confidence in the island's economy.
In comparison, the national unemployment rate was 5.3%. Regions with higher unemployment rates included Setúbal Peninsula (7.4%), the North and Greater Lisbon (5.7% each), while Madeira remained the region with the best performance.
