Madeira under orange weather warning for rain and strong wind this Saturday

The IPMA has issued orange rain and wind warnings for the whole region, including Porto Santo, with heavy rain and gusts up to 130 km/h.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts a very cloudy Saturday, 7 November, across the Madeira archipelago, with spells of rain or showers, at times heavy and persistent from late morning, especially in the south and the highlands. Thunderstorms are also possible.

Worsening conditions have led the IPMA to issue orange warnings for rain and wind across the whole region, including Porto Santo. The rain warning runs from 6 pm today until 3 am tomorrow. The wind warning applies from 6 pm to midnight Saturday, with gusts up to 100 km/h on the coasts and in Porto Santo, and up to 130 km/h in mountain areas.

Yellow warnings are in force earlier, from noon to 6 pm. In Funchal, the forecast is for persistent rain and southerly winds of up to 40 km/h, with gusts of 65 km/h in the afternoon. Seas on the south coast may reach 3.5 metres in the west of the island.
