Rui Viana, a man from Madeira convicted of drug trafficking in Indonesia, is still awaiting the formal extradition request from the Portuguese State to serve the remainder of his sentence in Portugal. Viana was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison.
Along with Fernando Sousa, another Portuguese national sentenced to 20 years, Rui Viana has been waiting for over two years for Portuguese authorities to initiate the transfer process. Both were arrested in March 2024 at Jakarta airport with nearly three kilograms of liquid cocaine hidden in shampoo bottles.
According to SIC Notícias, which reported the story, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to inquiries about the case. The two detainees are currently held in Tangerang prison, Banten province, serving their sentences while awaiting developments.
