Madeiran Police Officers Marco Camacho and Diogo Sousa Honoured with Public Security Award

Public Security Police (PSP) officers Marco Camacho and Diogo Sousa have been awarded the Public Security Award. The honour recognizes the courage and dedication they displayed while rescuing a family from a house threatened by fire in the parish of Santo António, Funchal.

The incident occurred on May 17, 2026, when the two officers were the first to arrive at the scene and found a large blaze rapidly spreading towards the house, where the occupants' escape routes were cut off.

Informed that several people, including children and an elderly person, remained inside, the officers entered the property through a roof window despite the danger. They successfully evacuated all panicked occupants, preventing a potential tragedy. Officer Diogo Sousa sustained injuries to his right hand during the rescue but continued to assist until everyone was safe.
