Writer, journalist, and researcher José Viale Moutinho died today at the age of 81, following a sudden illness, as announced by his family in a statement.
Described as a "major figure in Portuguese arts and letters," Viale Moutinho dedicated his life to words, memory, and culture, leaving behind a "vast and unique legacy" recognized both in Portugal and abroad.
Born in Funchal on June 12, 1945, José Viale Moutinho worked as a journalist for Jornal de Notícias and Diário de Notícias. His extensive literary output, encompassing short stories, poetry, novellas, and children's literature, has been translated into multiple languages and received numerous awards. He was also known for his work on popular literature, traditions, and studies of Camilo Castelo Branco and Trindade Coelho, as well as his research on the Spanish Civil War.
The wake is being held today from 7:00 PM at the Matosinhos Funeral Home, with the funeral scheduled for Wednesday at 3:30 PM at the same location.
