José Viale Moutinho, a Madeiran writer, journalist, poet, and essayist, has died, leaving an indelible mark on the island's culture.
Born in Funchal, Moutinho was known for his extensive body of work and his deep connection to island identity. The PCP-Madeira, a party to which he was linked as a militant and electoral representative, mourned his passing, describing it as a "painful wound" and highlighting his "solidary and fraternal person," his "courageous, relentless, at times paradoxically amiable, poetic, militant, merciless man."
The party also saluted the "free man, the defender of freedom and democracy," "viscerally intolerant of dictatorships and dictators." CDU/Madeira expressed condolences to his family and friends.
