Maricarmen Abascal, aged 87, died this Wednesday at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid. The death occurred approximately two weeks after she was evicted from the home where she had lived for about seven decades.
The death was confirmed by the Tenants' Union. Maricarmen was evicted on September 23rd and taken directly to the hospital. A few days later, on September 29th, an agreement was reached with the owner for her return home under a new eight-year lease. However, Maricarmen remained hospitalized and never returned to the residence.
The Tenants' Union described the solution as having come "too late." The case became a symbol of the fight for the right to housing in Spain and triggered protests across the country. Available reports do not officially attribute the death to the eviction, only confirming she passed away while still hospitalized.
