Maths to become compulsory until Year 12 from 2028/2029

The government plans to make Maths compulsory for all secondary students until Year 12, whatever course they choose.

The government intends that all secondary school students study Maths until Year 12, regardless of their chosen course. The announcement was made by Education, Science and Innovation Minister Fernando Alexandre during parliamentary debate on the 2027 State Budget, with the change due to take effect in the 2028/2029 school year.

The plan provides for a common core in secondary education, in which Maths would be compulsory from Year 10 to Year 12. After this shared component, students could follow more flexible paths, choosing subjects according to their academic or professional goals. The change would also extend to vocational education.

For now, the minister has not detailed how the subject will be adapted to different courses, nor the weekly teaching hours or the syllabus for each area. The government also plans to reorganise compulsory education into two six-year cycles and to open the new curriculum framework to public consultation by the end of 2026.
