Merlin Helicopter Rescues Sailor from Yacht in Operation Coordinated by Navy

A 65-year-old man was rescued from a yacht 159 nautical miles northwest of Madeira.

The Portuguese Navy, through the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Sub-centre (MRSC Funchal), coordinated the medical rescue of a 65-year-old crew member on September 1st.

The man, a Swiss national, was aboard the yacht "Metanoia 2", sailing approximately 159 nautical miles (about 294 kilometers) northwest of Madeira Island. The alert was raised due to a fall the crew member suffered on board.

Following a medical assessment, the rescue was deemed necessary. An EH-101 helicopter from the Portuguese Air Force was activated, carrying a Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR). The victim was subsequently transported to a hospital by the Santa Cruz Volunteer Firefighters.
