The Minister of Agriculture, António Leitão Amaro, has described the European Union's resistance to approving the renewal of the Madeira swordfish fleet as "unacceptable."
According to the minister, this EU stance jeopardizes the continuity of an important economic activity for the region. Leitão Amaro warned that the lack of a decision could have "negative consequences" for Madeiran producers.
The renewal of this fleet is considered essential for the sector's sustainability and competitiveness, and the delay in approval has caused concern among those involved.
