On September 10, 1919, a serious accident involving the train of the Companhia do Caminho de Ferro do Monte, in Funchal, tragically marked the history of the parish. During the ascent, the boiler of one of the locomotives exploded, causing four deaths and several injuries among passengers and workers.
The report from DIÁRIO de Notícias, published the following day, described a "great disaster," with the explosion of locomotive L4's boiler at the Pombal station. Hundreds of people flocked to the scene, including the curious and relatives seeking information.
Debris spread over hundreds of meters, with the boiler disappearing and parts of the machinery and carriages destroyed. The accident also caused damage to neighboring houses, making this incident one of the most tragic involving transport in Madeira.
