A new 4-star boutique hotel is being created on Rua Ivens and Rua Nova de São Pedro, with its opening scheduled for October 2027. The project, involving deep rehabilitation and reconstruction, is described as a sophisticated example of how contemporary architecture engages with Madeira's historical memory.
The building will feature two underground parking levels, a ground floor with a restaurant and reception, four upper floors, and a total of 31 rooms and suites. The design by internationally awarded architect Paulo David reinterprets the concept of traditional 19th-century Madeiran "pleasure houses," which served as romantic viewpoints, through suspended volumes projecting from the main facade.
Owned by Bruno and Graciano de Sousa of the Brugrani group, which already manages other hotel units on the island, the new hotel aims to be a serene structure integrated into Funchal's historical fabric, perpetuating the site's original experiences and functions without mimicking the past.
