The PSD Parliamentary Group has announced changes to the regional rules governing the car rental sector in Madeira. The modifications include new requirements for parking, vehicle safety, and company identification, alongside promoting a gradual transition towards more sustainable mobility.
PSD deputy Bruno Melim explained that the new legislation aims to address identified problems, particularly in high tourist demand areas, where rental vehicles were being left on public roads or occupying resident parking spaces. Rent-a-car companies must now provide their own designated parking areas for unrented vehicles, which can no longer be indiscriminately left in public spaces.
The new regulations mandate that companies provide clearly marked parking areas for unused vehicles, located within a 15-kilometre radius of their main establishment or busiest collection point. Furthermore, companies are required to have dedicated business premises with a physical customer service counter, enhancing operator identification and accountability in the region.
