The new season for naming extratropical storms in Europe commenced on September 1st and will continue until August 31, 2027. Portugal, through the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), is part of the southwest group.
The list of names for this season comprises 21 designations, alphabetically organized and alternating between male and female, starting with Adam. A storm is named when the issuance of orange or red level weather warnings is anticipated, with wind being the primary criterion.
This joint initiative by several European meteorological services, coordinated by EUMETNET, aims to simplify communication and coordination of potentially hazardous weather phenomena.
