Strong winds disrupted operations at Madeira International Airport throughout the day, causing delays and forcing at least one aircraft to divert.
Conditions worsened as the day progressed, with the Santa Catarina weather station recording a maximum gust of 78 km/h at 15:00. Earlier readings showed gusts up to 69 km/h and average wind speeds of 39.2 km/h from the north.
Several incoming services were affected, including flights from Birmingham, Lisbon, and Liverpool. A Eurowings flight from Düsseldorf was diverted to Porto Santo Airport after multiple unsuccessful landing attempts. The wind's strength and direction were believed to be the main causes of the disruption.
