The ecologist party Os Verdes has reaffirmed its total opposition to the cable car and zipline project in Curral das Freiras, after media reports that construction had begun.
The party says the project poses risks to residents and tourists due to geological and climatic conditions in a vulnerable area, and argues that adequate geological studies were not carried out. It also describes the project as an environmental and landscape crime.
Os Verdes further argue that the economic benefits will flow mainly to tourism operators, leaving the local population with little. The party also criticises the rent to be paid to the IFCN and compares the scheme to the Marina do Lugar de Baixo. It hopes the reports of construction prove unfounded.
