More than 1,700 people have signed a petition calling for the protection of Madeira's urban model, rejecting an increase in high-rise development and urging a wide-ranging public debate on the issue.
The petition, which has gathered 1,732 signatures, follows recent comments by the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, who advocated for revising Funchal's Municipal Master Plan (PDM) to allow residential buildings of up to 20 storeys to address land shortages.
The signatories urge political parties in the Madeiran parliament to propose a resolution recommending that the Regional Government does not approve changes allowing buildings over ten storeys as a general rule. The petition also calls for planning policies to promote balanced urban growth compatible with the scale of Madeiran towns, preserving the landscape and ensuring existing infrastructure can cope.
