The Assembly of the Republic has approved Resolution Project No. 1248/XVII/2.ª, which recommends that the Government adopt measures to compensate for the structural costs of insularity and reduce its impact on the cost of living in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores.
JPP deputy Filipe Sousa described the approval as an "important step" in recognizing the reality that living on an island incurs additional transport and logistics costs, reflected in prices. The initiative calls for a national response to compensate for these extra costs, coordinated with regional and European mechanisms, and advocates for a Transport POSEI within the EU.
The approved project includes periodic updates to funding, ensuring support translates into reduced consumer costs, and acknowledges situations of double insularity. Sousa, however, expressed regret over the PSD's stance, noting that their deputies elected from the island regions voted against the proposal, prioritizing national party directives over defending regional specificities.
