Paul do Mar: History and Origins of a Madeiran Parish

Paul do Mar is a narrow fajã at the foot of a cliff about 500 meters high, on the southwest coast of Madeira Island. The name 'Paul' comes from 'marshy land by the sea', a description supported by the Lagoa area.

João Anes do Couto Cardoso was one of the first settlers, receiving land and establishing residence. In the 16th century, a hermitage dedicated to Saint Amaro, patron of fishermen and travelers, was built, reflecting the historical importance of sea transport for the community.

Accessibility improved significantly with the completion of the road in 1968, connecting Fajã da Ovelha to Paul do Mar. The parish of Paul do Mar was established in the early 18th century, when the church was rebuilt due to its dilapidated state.
