Paulo Neves, a Member of Parliament and President of IPDAL, argued that Madeira should possess greater decision-making authority in international affairs concerning its territory. This proposal was put forth during the opening of Mesclarte’26 at the Madeiran Parliament.
Neves suggested considering the possibility of Madeira becoming a federal state, endowed with enhanced powers in areas currently under the Republic's jurisdiction. He emphasized Madeira's Atlantic centrality and Portugal's strategic importance in the Euro-Atlantic sphere, asserting that Madeira should have a say in decisions affecting its land, maritime, and underwater territories.
The MP also raised the idea of the Region having a permanent representative within the Portuguese delegation to NATO. He further discussed the significance of improved coordination among Portuguese-speaking countries and advocated for Portugal to present unified positions on strategic foreign policy matters.
