PCP holds horn-honking protest against rising cost of living in Funchal

Drivers joined a PCP protest at the western entrance of Funchal against higher prices across the region.

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) staged a horn-honking protest against the rising cost of living at the western entrance of Funchal, on the road to São Martinho. Many drivers passing through the area honked in support of the demonstration.

PCP spokesperson Ricardo Lume said social discontent is growing in Madeira and across Portugal. According to the party, Madeira recorded the highest inflation rate in the country in September, at 4.6%. The food basket rose 4.7% compared with 2025, housing rents jumped 17.4%, diesel increased by more than 40% and petrol by 26%.

The party accuses the PSD/CDS regional government of failing to use its autonomous powers to curb rising prices and of favouring speculators. The PCP says it will continue organising protests and campaigns.
