The president of the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly, Rubina Leal, said that an ageing population requires public policies to adapt, so that longer lives are lived with dignity, autonomy, safety and quality of life.
Speaking at the awards ceremony for the «Senior Citizenship – Madeira in Europe» competition, held in the regional parliament, she said that «it is not enough to add years to life. It is essential to add life to the years». The initiative stems from a protocol with MEP Paulo do Nascimento Cabral and involved seven senior universities across the region.
The Ribeira Brava Senior University took first place, while the Caniço Senior University received an honourable mention. Leal challenged organisers to hold a new edition next year.
