The Funchal City Council deactivated the bus stop near the Anadia Shopping Centre starting September 2, 2026. SIGA CAM and SIGA Rodoeste companies will now use Largo do Pelourinho for boarding and alighting, while Horários do Funchal will use a new stop in front of the Savoy Residence.
This traffic change has permanently rendered useless the pedestrian bridge that connected the Rampa do Pelourinho to Avenida do Mar and Rua da Casa da Luz, replaced in 2010 by a new crossing over the Ribeira de João Gomes. The structure, built with taxpayer money, is now criticized for becoming a "white elephant," serving merely as a locked ornament.
The decision raises questions about isolated urban planning and the priority given to pedestrians, as the new stop forces passengers to walk to the Mercado bridge to cross to Rua Fernão de Ornelas, failing to provide fluid pedestrian routes.
