Pieces with History at the Lyceum: Heritage on the Table

The 'O Lyceu' Museum Nucleus highlights a set of crockery from the Liceu Jaime Moniz canteen, produced in the 1940s.

In the month marking World Food Day, the 'O Lyceu' Museum Nucleus is showcasing a set of crockery from the Liceu Jaime Moniz canteen. The pieces, made by Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém in the latter half of the 1940s, include a white faience cup and saucer.

Decorated with a blue band and the emblem of Mocidade Portuguesa, these items recall the often-overlooked aspect of school life: student nutrition. During the Estado Novo regime, school canteens became important, with Mocidade Portuguesa delegations responsible for providing affordable meals and supporting students facing economic hardship. The Liceu Jaime Moniz canteen officially opened in October 1945, following delays in equipment delivery.
