Public Security Police (PSP) officers Marco Camacho and Diogo Sousa have been awarded the Public Security Award.
This distinction recognizes the courage and sense of duty demonstrated during an intervention in May 2026 in the parish of Santo António, Funchal. The officers were the first to arrive at an urban fire in a residential area, where flames threatened a house.
Facing danger and information that the home contained several people, including two children and an elderly person, the officers accessed the property through a roof window. They successfully evacuated all occupants to safety, averting a tragedy. During the operation, Diogo Sousa sustained injuries to his right hand but remained committed to the mission.
