The Port of Caniçal is set for expansion to handle the rise in cargo traffic and ensure the island's supply chain.
The president of APRAM, Paula Cabaço, revealed that an application to Madeira 2030 has been approved for extending the quay, increasing container space, remodelling the breakwater, and installing shore power for ships.
Cargo handled at the port has increased by 35% between 2020 and 2025, with approximately 95% of goods entering Madeira through this port. The current infrastructure is becoming insufficient, despite a recent ten-million-euro upgrade.
Cabaço noted that further investments will be needed for larger vessels, warning that physical limitations could impact long-term operational capacity.
