The ceremony commemorating the 191st anniversary of the municipality of Porto Moniz began with a tribute to the victims of the recent double earthquake that struck Venezuela.
The president of the Municipal Assembly, João Carlos Conceição, invoked the strong historical ties between the municipality and the emigrant community in Venezuela, inviting attendees to observe a minute of silence.
Conceição highlighted the resilience of Porto Moniz's population and the significance of the day for the four parishes, remembering those who helped build the municipality's history and those who emigrated without losing their connection to their homeland.
The president expressed the municipality's "heartbreak" over the consequences of the earthquakes, which caused destruction and loss of life, including Portuguese citizens and those of Portuguese descent, conveying a message of solidarity.
